Chapter twenty-four

SEAN

Sean watched them for a few moments, enjoying the sight of Brit at play. He had the random thought that while alcohol had brought out the demons in Maggie Delany, it had the opposite effect for her daughter, setting her demons at bay. On the heels of that thought, Brit caught his eye with a smile that stopped his heart.

Jasper immediately redirected her attention. Sean slipped from the booth, wanting to stretch his legs. He walked over to the bar to request the water Brit had been seeking earlier. Managing to find a place to lean in the crowded place as he waited, his eyes went back to the space she occupied with Jasper, the girls, and several others. He wasn’t alone long, however, as Evie again approached him.

“I admit I’m curious,” she said as a way of a conversation opener, squeezing in next to him at the bar. The man sitting on his barstool automatically acknowledged her and gladly made room for her. Her hips were thrusting against Sean’s, her buttocks brushing against the man behind her as she wedged her way in.

Sean’s brows raised in silent inquiry as his eyes slid down to where she’d pressed herself against him suggestively. He returned his gaze to her all-too-inviting one, but he wasn’t interested in the offer.

Looking over her shoulder at Brit, she looked back at Sean and then asked, “That one?”

Sean followed the direction of her glance and smiled. “We’ve known each other since we were children.” More than that, but not something this woman needed to know.

“And…?”

“You have to be more direct, Evie. I assume it comes naturally to you.”

“How long is she here?”

Sean frowned, wondering why it mattered. “Another week.”

“So, it’s a passing fancy? You’re free of your obligations after a week?”

He smiled at her. “I appreciate the interest, but Brit has never been a passing fancy, and my obligation to her has never had a timeline.”

“Hm. From the way Jasper spoke, she’s been gone for some time.”

He nodded. “She has. But there’s a history I’m sure Jasper hasn’t mentioned.”

“I’ve heard enough to know about her past with you. With you both, really.”

Sean tossed her an inquisitive look. “Why would he mention it in connection with me?”

Evie chuckled. “It seems two studs are trying to mount the same filly.” With a sigh, she looked back at Brit. “Sex, I understand. She’s lovely, in an independent American sort of way, but to command such levels of devotion from both of you is intriguing.”

“As I said, we grew up together.” He almost said they were all devoted to one another, but that had been in the past. “You didn’t answer my question.”

Evie smiled. “Jasper and I are friends; we talk. I suppose you can say we have a history, too, although not as long as yours and his American girl there. As I said, he does go on about her.”

His American girl; nothing about her was Jasper’s, not now. Sean lifted his gaze over her blonde head to the frolicking scene.
